During the week of September 21—25, 2009, schools across the state will be serving fresh, locally grown food to students in celebration of Massachusetts Harvest for Students Week. Schools will highlight locally grown foods on their menus, and support the local economy by purchasing food directly from Massachusetts farms.
Studies have shown that students served locally grown food eat significantly more servings of fresh fruits and vegetables than in traditional cafeterias, encouraging healthy eating habits.
The menu for the week will include locally grown produce from McKinstry’s Market Garden in Chicopee and Breezland Orchards in Warren, MA. Locally grown apples, salad greens, tomatoes, squash, and potatoes will be among the sampling of fresh, seasonal produce that will be served.
New this year we will be featuring cabbage from our district garden located at the SMK Elementary School. We will be making fresh coleslaw and garden vegetable soup.
